METHODS OF SEDIMENT REMOVAL
The Lake Doctor is happy to assist you with any of the following methods of sediment removal. We will also provide you with the best solution to solve your problem. |
Conventional methods that utilize draglines and backhoes typically cause excessive destruction of the landscape. At The Lake Doctor, we have found that estimates for removing sediment using this method typically runs about 50% or more above the cost of our sediment removal system. You must first drain the pond and then haul the sediment slurry that is dug out. The impact in most cases is extreme and can also destroy any fish population you do have.
In small ponds this is an option that our experts at The Lake Doctor utilize as needed. However in most cases it is inefficient and causes excessive turbidity in the water. |
Hydraulic dredging is the method our experts at The Lake Doctor have found to be the most effective. The dredge is a pump and a collection system that is mounted on a small boat built for the purpose of dredging. All you see is something the size of a pontoon boat floating on the water and a very quiet diesel engine.
The pump pulls the material off the bottom of the lake and pumps it through a pipe to nearby locations. Temporary pipe is laid at the disposal location and pipelines are installed under roads or walkways or temporary ramps can be built if needed.
There other dredging methods that are recommended at times but they are ineffective for significant sediment build up. |
Chemical Dredging Treatments: |
For light deposits in small ponds these may help. You simply can not make matter disappear, however, some material may be consumed, but it is still insignificant.
Alum - Treating organic sediment with Alum is used to lock up nutrients such as phosphorus. This is a simple bandaid on the problem that will not go away.
Aeration - Aeration will help to a degree, however, aeration will not make significant deposits go away. None of the above have any effect on mineral sediment such as sand and other mineral soils.
Our experts at The Lake Doctor will guide you on the proper use of these controls in situations where they will be of value. |
Handling the Dredged Material: |
In hydraulic dredging, water is used as a carrier to move the material. The sediment and the water must be separated and the water is either returned to the lake after being dredged or left to settle or evaporate. During hydraulic dredging, the water is used as a carrier to move the material. |
At The Lake Doctor, we can provide you with the best solution for your pond at an affordable price. Our goal is to help you restore your pond to its original condition and also to allow you to better control the water quality of your pond. We intend to not cause any damage to your property other than the containment area for the bags or spoil areas. We want you to avoid any unnecessary costs to clean and restore your landscape after the sediment is removed.
