All Trio systems offer:
ALUMINUM CONSTRUCTION – With baked-on enamel. Heat reflective, attractive, durable, lightweight enough to provide a cool house that’s still light enough to raise and lower easily. Very important.
VERTICAL RAISING AND LOWERING – Important to insure martin nests are not disturbed when a house is raised or lowered to clean out sparrow nests or treat martin nests.
EASY CLEAN-OUT – Compartments open with hinged doors for convenient clean-out of sparrow nests or treatment of martin nests.
GUARD RAILS – Help prevent young from falling to ground. J.L. Wade, the nation’s leading martin authority says it is inhumane to erect a house without guard rails.
WINTER CLOSING – Door stops keep sparrows from becoming entrenched during winter when martins are absent.
PROPER VENTILATION – Air flow, plus predominantly white or natural aluminum surfaces for heat reflection, are important to keep any house cool enough for martins.
STARLING-FREE INTERIORS – Bright, airy interiors discourage starlings from nesting because they like dark cavities.
POSITIVE SPARROW CONTROL – Any Trio house can be instantly converted to a trap through use of low-cost Spare-O-Door, amazingly effective at catching the sparrows trying to nest in a house. The Trio line also includes the all purpose bait-type ST-1 sparrow trap for year round use.
Covered by U.S. Pat. Nos 25.878: 3.367.632: 3.410.248. 3.426.732: 3.496.913: 3.563.205: D-221.090: 3.643.631: 3.988.480 |
The purple martin, largest of swallows, eats only flying insects. Junius Henderson, in Bulletin 179 of the U.S. Museum of Natural History, said, “The number of flying insects each one destroys is almost beyond comprehension.”
A Texas entomologist killed one in early morning hours that already had eaten 300 mosquitoes. At that rate it could easily have eaten 2,000 a day. C.S. Robbins, co-author of the guide, Birds of North America, said, “One martin could eat 10,000 mosquitoes a day if available.”
For whatever reason people first attract martins, they continue simply because they like these birds. They are beautiful, graceful, clean and interesting. Unlike most birds, they seem curious about people, and are aptly termed “semi-domesticated.”
The only way to attract martins is to put up a house. Once they accept it, they will return faithfully year after year. One colony is 200 years old. Typical colonies range from a few pairs to 20 or 30 pairs, and some have more than 100 pairs. |
